JDrama refers to a Japanese television series. It doesn’t have to be drama, either; it’s an umbrella term that covers everything from comedy to thrillers to romance. I started watching JDramas a couple of years ago, but stopped for a while. I recently decided to start watching them again, and after a bit of research, I settled on this one: Date – | デート～恋とはどんなものかしら～(Detto – Koi to wa Donna Mono Kashira).
As the title implies, it’s all about dating.デート is your regular, garden variety romcom with a twist: both protagonists are incredibly socially awkard. We have Yabushita Yoriko, a 29-year-old economics expert who holds a Masters degree from the prestigious University of Tokyo and works for the government in the field of macroeconomics research. Her match? Taniguchi Takumi, a NEET (or as he refers to himself, “educated idler”) who is unemployed and depends on his mother for a living, engrossing himself in film, literature, music, and art.
I must confess that this JDrama had me in tears! Tears of laughter, that is. I found it absolutely hilarious, if a little silly and frustrating at times. I personally felt that Yoriko and Takumi were a horrible match for each other, and I was unhappy with the ending. Nonetheless, I thought this was a fun, light-hearted, sometimes silly watch, with twists and turns that kept it interesting. I would definitely recommend it!
デート was broadcast on FujiTV from 19th January 2015 to 23rd March 2015. You can watch it here.
